FIFA 23 was officially revealed earlier this month and one of the big features of this year’s game is expanded cross-play functionality. FIFA 23 will support cross-play for various online game modes on different platforms of the same generation.

This means PlayStation 4 and Xbox One gamers can play against each other, while PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Stadia and PC (yes, it’s not part of the next-gen fam) can all play against each other in certain online modes. Against friends, you can play Online Friendlies or FIFA Ultimate team’s Play a Friend modes. Meanwhile, worldwide matchmaking will have cross-play support in FUT Friendlies, FUT Rivals, Fut Champions, FUT Online Draft and Online Seasons.

But there’s another layer to this: the FUT Transfer Market. The FUT Transfer Market will also include cross-platform functionality, with all consoles (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Stadia) having a shared FUT Transfer Market Pool. So if you list an item on Stadia, a PS4 player can see and interact with it. Meanwhile, both the PC and the Nintendo Switch will each have their own individual FUT Transfer Market.

FUT Leaderboards are also split up with Global Leaderboards and Local Leaderboards. In order to see the Global Leaderboards, you must have cross-play enabled. There will be four Local Leaderboards, split up by console family. So PS4 and PS5 make up one Local leaderboard while Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S make up another. Stadia and PC (Origin/Steam/Epic) will have their own individual Local Leaderboards as well.

To help keep track of all this, EA will launch a social widget. Dubbed “EA Social,” this widget will allow you to search, add, and send/receive invites across platforms. EA Social will display a wealth of information about your friends such as their online status, platform and cross-play compatibility. Unfortunately, EA Social is still in development so plans for it may change or update over time.

FIFA 23 is set to launch on September 30. Stay tuned as EA shares more details about this year’s game in the coming days and weeks ahead.
