The Last of Us Part II leaks and death threats

This game and its developers have seen the absolute best and the absolute worst of the gaming community even before its launch. So much misinformation and polarizing opinions seemed to have plagued the internet within a matter of minutes when leaked footage and a detailed description of the key events surfaced.

First of all, it was said that some “disgruntled worker” leaked the sensitive information. That wasn’t the case, however. What did end up happening after that information was debunked was that people who were spoiled had mostly negative opinions of the game from there on in. It only got worse as the game came closer to releasing. Most of the trailers and updates coming from Sony and other big outlets were met with overwhelming dislikes and horrible comments.

Many people have still not played the game, including myself. To protect others from spoilers though, most of the polarizing reactions had to do with the fact that this game detracts from the main focus of the first. The direction the game took felt like it was pandering to an extent, and I get why some people are disappointed. However, the way people were expressing their dislike for the direction was mostly not handled in a civil manner. Comments had to be disabled for a lot of trailers and some of the angered fans went beyond to go as far as sending death threats to the voice actors and people involved with the development of TLOU2.

To add salt to the wounds of those who overreacted, this game snubbed a lot of awards and praise. I mean, I’m not too fond of the direction this game took either, but I do think this game is deserving of the praise it got to an extent. It’s a technical marvel and very innovative and it’s okay if this is not in your list of best games of 2020, but to review bomb it and give it unjustified low scores is just childish and petty.
