God of War II

The majority of games are undoubtedly a power fantasy in one form or another. However few games have really taken that idea and just gone crazy with it as well as the God of War series. The second game in this epic adventure franchise was easily the best implementation of this and the best game of the initial series before the recent reboot.

Series protagonist Kratos was a brutal, practically unstoppable killing machine and it was pretty glorious at the time. It didn’t matter if you were a highly trained soldier, a giant cyclops, or even the mightiest of the Greek gods, Kratos could take you down and feared nothing.

It wasn’t just the level of power and brutality that God of War II excelled at either. What made the series special was just how well it nailed spectacle. Every set piece and boss battle was insanely impressive and often had a great sense of scale, especially on the occasions where you were fighting a foe many times your size, which happened on numerous occasions in the series.

I’m glad the series went in a very different direction for the reboot, but God of War II remains a high watermark in the series and still remains an absolutely fun and brutal blast.
