Code Vein – PS4, Xbox One – September 27

Developed by Bandai Namco and inspired by the Dark Souls franchise, is there really anything else that needs to be said about Code Vein?

Deep characer customization, the exploration of a post-apocalyptic dystopian setting (The Ruins of Vein) and unique bosses, Code Vein is a vampiric adventure that very clearly gets its inspiration from Dark Souls.

But it’s not a clone by any means. Stylistically, the game’s couldn’t be more different. Code Vein has more of an anime look to it, and the combat seems to embrace that. Combat seems quicker, which isn’t to say that it’s a button masher. Like Dark Souls, it looks like you’ll have to approach each boss tactfully and with caution.

If you enjoy brutal punishment, Code Vein is probably right up your ally. I can’t say for certain how difficult it will play in comparison to the Dark Souls franchise, but you don’t have to look hard to spot the similarities.

While Code Vein is primarily a single player action-RPG, there is an online co-op multiplayer component that allows friends or random players to team up and battle the Lost. Don’t expect Borderlands-type multiplayer, but it’s a system that at least provides some sense of online camaraderie. Unfortunately, there will be PvP component at launch, but perhaps it could arrive at a later date.
