18. Dragon Quest VI

Though it’s not probably going to top anyone’s list of best RPGs ever, you could do a lot worse if you’re fiending for a fantasy RPG fix than Dragon Quest VI. It’s a fun combination of time-honored genre trappings with just the start of some new developments like the somewhat flexible class system. That was probably a big deal when the game was originally released for the Super Famicom in 1995.

The story is just fine, too, focusing on a threat to both the Real World and the Dream World. Plus the bad guy is someone we can all agree on is someone who needs to be taken down, the Ultimate Evil. I think the Bible calls him something different.

To top it all off, you don’t even need to have played any of the previous Dragon Quest games to enjoy this one. That’s not true too often for any series that makes it to six or more installments, so that alone is a testament to its quality.
