Xbox Games with Gold has left a lot to be desired in recent months, and it doesn’t appear to be getting any better. Microsoft revealed the Games with Gold lineup for December 2022 and we’ll be getting Colt Canyon and Bladed Fury, two titles worth a combined $34.98.
Colt Canyon released in June 2020 while Bladed Fury came out in March 2021. Neither is what we would consider a blockbuster game but that’s not to say you can’t find enjoyment in them.
Colt Canyon is a 2D pixel art shooter set in the Wild West. Armed with a simple revolver, you play as a cowboy, or one of the other unlockable characters, on a mission to save his kidnapped partner from ruthless bandits. Blast your way through a hostile canyon filled with hidden treasures, weapons and obstacles.
Colt Canyon seemingly flew under the radar. It sits at a 72 on Metacritic for the Nintendo Switch but that’s based on only four critic reviews. There’s no Metascore for the Xbox One version.
Bladed Fury is a 2D action game set in Ancient China. Based on Chinese mythology with an accompanying traditional art style, you play as Princess Ji. Accused of murder and exiled, Princess Ji sets off on an action-packed journey to prove her innocence and rescue her sister.
Bladed Fury also scored a 72 on Metacritic but, again, that’s based only four critic reviews.
On one hand, you’re getting two free games, and they are titles that you probably never played before judging by the lack of reviews. On the other hand, it’s disappointing to see how the value of Xbox Games with Gold has diminished in recent months. A part of that is simply because we’re no longer getting two Xbox 360 titles. Microsoft stopped included Xbox 360 games in the Games with Gold lineup because they reached their limit of their ability to bring any additional classics to the catalog.
