Nintendo will continue to focus on marketing the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite in 2020, opting not to release a new model of the hybrid console.
With both PlayStation and Xbox releasing their next-gen consoles this year, some have wondered if Nintendo will launch a new version of the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo typically marches by. the beat of its own drum when it comes to console releases.
The original Nintendo Switch was released in March 2017, nearly four years after the launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. And while Sony and Microsoft tend to focus more on top-of-the-line hardware specs, Nintendo usually opts to go with innovation. That meant a hybrid console that was capable of being played at home on the big-screen or on-the-go via the handheld screen.
But as we prepare to enter the next-generation and consoles take the next leap forward technologically, Nintendo risks being left behind once again (not that they actually ever caught up from a hardware perspective). Speaking to investors during the company’s financial briefing (via Gamesindustry), Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa pretty much confirmed that Nintendo will not be releasing a new Nintendo Switch model in 2020.
“Regarding Nintendo Switch, we believe that it is important to continue to communicate the appeal of both Nintendo Switch systems and expand the installed base. Please note that we have no plans to launch a new Nintendo Switch model during 2020.”
Furukawa, of course, is referring to the traditional Nintendo Switch model and the Nintendo Switch Lite, which is designed with even more portability in mind. The Nintendo Switch Lite launched in September 2019, just a few months after the July release of the latest Nintendo Switch model with an improved battery life. Combined, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 52 million units since its debut.
“We feel that we have not yet fully communicated the special features and appeal of Nintendo Switch Lite, so we will continue to address this going forward.”
Initial reports of a Nintendo Switch Pro being in development came in early 2019 alongside talk of a cheaper model (which came to be the Switch Lite). The Switch Pro was rumored to be enhanced with “features targeted at avid gamers.” Obviously, that never came to fruition.
Although no new Nintendo Switch model will be released in 2020, Nintendo does have plans to release special edition versions of the current version. One such example of this is the recently revealed system inspired by Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
