NetherRealm, WWE Partner For WWE Immortals

One of the best parts of my job is seeing how truth really is stranger than fiction sometimes. For instance, if I told you that NetherRealm Studios, the folks most famous for the Mortal Kombat series, were working with the WWE to make a mobile game, your first reaction would probably be, “Really?”

Yes, really. Announced yesterday by the WWE and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the game is called WWE Immortals, and it’s planned for iOS and Android during 2015. As with NetherRealm’s other mobile games (the mobile version of Injustice: Gods Among Us), this one will be developed in part by another team, in this case Phosphor Game Studios.

We can be pretty sure it’s not going to be a straight wrestling sim or a card battle game, since 2K would be involved if it was. The initial press release only states that it will be “a free-to-play mobile game that will feature epic Superstar battles in a fantastically re-imagined WWE world.” I could see some types of fighting game that also incorporates the wrestlers’ signature moves, and calling it Immortals suggests that ring legends of the past will be part of the action along with today’s top stars.

One thing I’d bet the house on is that it’s not going to have the same kind of gore as Mortal Kombat, because the WWE doesn’t do that these days. We’ll see what comes from this interesting partnership sometime next year.
