Thanks to Mark Venturelli of Rogue Snail, I had a chance to play the very early beta of Chroma Squad over the holiday weekend. If you haven’t heard of the Kickstarter-funded game, it’s a parody of and tribute to tokusatsu shows, which shouldn’t be a surprise since it’s from the people at Behold Studios, who both celebrated and skewered RPG conventions with Pen & Paper RPG.
The gist of it involves running your own sentai studio, attempting to cast a group of five heroes to battle a variety of enemies in street clothes, in their individually colored outfits and, when necessary, in a giant mecha that all five of them combine to pilot. If you think that sounds a lot like the Power Rangers, you’re not alone, as Saban Brands supposedly had a talk with Behold this summer.
In any case, even in its early stages, the game is a lot of fun, and its tactical, turn-based battles would be perfect on touchscreens (the lesson of XCOM: Enemy Unknown just keeps on giving). So can we expect it on iOS and Android tablets as was the plan during the Kickstarter campaign? Venturelli says “we do have plans, but it’s not confirmed at the moment.”
I hope it gets to that point. Chroma Squad is shaping up to be one dose of pixelated goodness that I want to be able to play anywhere.
