Not Much Change Among Top App Charts, Facebook Messenger Still Ruling Free Apps

If Facebook wanted to make sure its Messenger app was going to be adopted by the widest number of mobile users, maybe it should have dropped the ability to message people from its normal app a long time ago.

Though the decision to do so was met with howls of derision in many places,  it’s paying off in very concrete fashion at the moment. Facebook Messenger was again the most downloaded free app on iOS for the third straight week according to App Annie, and it currently sits in the top spot on the Google Play for Android chart as well. It just goes to show you that while people may complain, once they get invested in a particular social network and use it heavily, it’s hard for them to leave, even if it means downloading two apps to do what they used to be able to do with one.

Several games jumped into the iOS free app top five. Roller Coaster Tycoon 4 Mobile is number two, capitalizing on the fact that it is now truly free-to-play instead of merely seeming like it is. Glu Mobile’s Tap Sports Baseball, an intriguing combination of simple gameplay, deep stats and real big league players, is fifth just a few days after it first hit the App Store.

The seemingly unstoppable Clash of Clans is the top-grossing app on both iOS and Android and has shown no signs of slowing down any time soon. Check out AppAnnie.com for full app store charts for iOS, Google Play, Amazon, Windows Phone and more.
