It looks like people can’t live without their Facebook chat.
Just a few days after Facebook announced that mobile users would have to download and use its standalone Messenger app to chat with their Facebook friends going forward, plenty of people have jumped onboard. As a result, Messenger sits atop the iOS Top App Chart for free downloads in the U.S. this week according to App Annie. It’s also number one on the free Android chart, giving Facebook the number one and two spots there.
It’s a rare triumph for a non-game app among free iOS apps, but a game is still holding it down among paid apps as Micromon — probably the closest people are going to get to playing Pokemon on their smartphones unless Nintendo someday changes its mind about letting it go mobile — shot to number one. On the top-grossing side, it’s business as usual: Clash of Clans is bringing in the most revenue on both iOS and Android, and only Pandora on iOS is breaking the stranglehold that games have on the top-grossing top 10 lists.
